  • Brief introduction to Tianjin Municipal Archives (Tianjin Municipal Local Chronicles Compilation and Revision Committee Office)

    On November 22, 2018, Tianjin Municipal Archives (Tianjin Municipal Local Chronicles Compilation and Revision Committee Office) (hereinafter referred to as "the municipal Archives (the municipal Local Chronicles compilation and Revision Committee Office)") was officially established. In accordance with the unified arrangement of the city’s institutional reform, the administrative responsibilities of the Municipal Archives have been assigned to the General Office of the Municipal Party Committee, meanwhile, the responsibilities of the Municipal Archives other than the administrative responsibilities have been integrated with the responsibilities of the Municipal Chronicles compilation and Revision Committee Office. Therefore, the Municipal Archives is reorganized as a public institution directly under the Municipal Party Committee.

    The Municipal Archives (Municipal Local Chronicles Compilation and Revision Committee Office) perform relevant duties on archives and choronicles such as guidelines and policies, laws, regulations and rules, archive receiving, collection, storage, arrangement, identification as well as the important archival materials exploiting according to the regulations. It is also required to draw up the work plan of the city's local chronicles and yearbooks, manage to organize, guide, inspect and accept, collect, arrange, control and exploit the local records and information.

    Tianjin Municipal Archives, established in 1964, is a permanent archive storage base and a service center for all sectors around the society. It is a comprehensive archive with more than one million volumes of provincial collections across the country. In 1994, it was named Tianjin Patriotism Education Base by the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee. It joined the Urban Archives Committee of the International Archives Council in 1996 and was appraised national first-level archives in 1997. In 2008, the government information access service center was opened. In 2011, Tianjin Municipal Archives was named the first batch of national archives education social practice bases by the National Archives Bureau.

    Tianjin Municipal Local History Compilation and Revision Committee was established in 1984 with an general editting office setted in the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. In 1990, the Tianjin Municipal Local History Compilation and Revision Committee was renamed Tianjin Municipal Local Chronicles Compilation and Revision Committee, meanwhile, the general editing office was renamed Tianjin Municipal Local Chronicles Compilation and Revision Committee Office (referred to as the Municipal Local Chronicles Office).

    The Archives is located at No. 11-1, Fukang Road, Nankai District(the intersection of Fukang Road and Shui Park West Road). The building area is more than 26,000 square meters. The collection of archives contains nearly 1,200 fonds and more than 1.7 million volumes. There are more than 800,000 volumes of historical archives with the earliest file, a real estate deed of the 48th year of Wanli(1620) in the Ming dynasty. The collection which truly record the development history of politics, economy, culture, education and other fields in Tianjin in modern times, especially since the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China play an important role in historical corroboration and research. There are also more than 10,000 volumes of various local chronicles and more than 30,000 old photos stored in the archives.

    The archives are provided with good archive storage condition such as modern safety protection equipments and advanced archive utilization service facilities. There are also domestic first-class treasure repository and archive restoration base, specialized reception and utilization service hall, Tianjin municipal government information retrieval place and multi-functional lecture hall in the archives. Tianjin Local Chronicles Museum provides local chronicles reference service. The collection of chronicles is accessible to the public freely, meanwhile, the local information is also opened to the public. At the end of 2011, the Modern Tianjin History Research Center was established to carry out editing research and academic exchanges of modern Tianjin archives and historical materials. It has successively edited and published historical archives and historical materials such as the "North Four Banks" series of Tianjin modern financial archives, the brief series of historical figures in modern Tianjin, local information series, local history research series and old records collation results, etc. Tianjin Municipal Archives aims at serving economic and social development and boosting Tianjin's cultural construction. In order to meet the needs of the society and give full play to the role of patriotism education base, exhibitions such as "Tianjin City Memory Exhibition" are held all year round.
